Both AMD and Intel announced price cuts earlier this week on both notebook and desktop processors, more than likely to clear room for new products in their respective lines. Here is a look at some of the price drops:

  • The TL-60, a dual-core 2GHz Turion notebook chip, dropped 26 percent, from $354 to $263.
  • The TL-56, which is a similar chip that runs at 1.8GHz, dropped from $263 to $220.
  • The TL-52, which runs at 1.6GHz, goes from $220 to $184.
  • On the desktop side of things, the Athlon 64 FX-62, a 2.8GHz monster chip for gamers, declined from $827 to $713.

On the Intel side of things:

  • The Celeron D 360 for desktops went from $84 to $69, an 18 percent decline.
  • The Celeron 326,that being the absolute bottom line chip from Intel, went from $39 to $34.

linspirelogoLinspire Inc., developer of the commercial desktop Linux operating system and Freespire (their free community ops system), announced that as of today its CNR (Click ‘N Run) service will be free. Yes, we said free.

Until now the service has only been available through annual subscriptions, with prices ranging from $20 - $50. With the new free service, Linspire and Freespire users can install, update, and manage thousands of open-source software programs, which is equal to the basic $20 plan.

“For nearly five years, thousands of CNR users have paid annual subscription fees for the CNR Service,” said Kevin Carmony, CEO of Linspire. “We’re thrilled to now be in a position to offer this excellent service to desktop Linux users absolutely free.”

If you are an existing user, you must register to create your new free account. If you have purchased the basic CNR service within the past 60 days, you will automatically be upgraded to CNR Gold (which allows you to purchase commercial software at reduced rates).

Linspire also announced plans for a new, open-sourced version of its CNR client as part of Freespire 1.1 to be released later this year, also at no charge. This might be just the excuse you need to jump on the ol’ Linux bandwagon.

PowerStation Cable OrganizerWith everything from Blackberrys to PDAs to Cellphones, is it any wonder why a desk can get cluttered with all the mobile gadgets one needs to stay wired to the office throughout the day?  Not to mention the power plug issues that come with trying to charge up more than two of said gadgets simultaneously?

DS Lite Released Early

Some folks over at the CheapAssGamer forums are letting the world know that they have been able to find Nintendo DS Lite units on store shelves at Wal-Mart and Target stores. The DS Lite is still scheduled to launch on June 11, and you can expect GameStop and EBGames to honor that date - however, larger stores like Target often miss those minor details when they get their shipments. Now is the time to head over to your local major retailer if you want to try and grab an early DS Lite. If you find one, let us know where in the comments.

TextPayMeWow, is this service long overdue or what? TextPayMe is a PayPal-like service that allows you to send and receive money by simply using SMS over your mobile device. Even better, they are currently giving anyone who signs up a free $5.00 deposit into their TextPayMe account. Here are a few of the suggestions they offer for using the service:

  • Split restaurant bills on the spot
  • Settle your roommate’s rent and utility bill from wherever
  • Pitch in real money for a split gift rather than an IOU

We will definitely be giving this one a spin. Having the ability to do this from wherever you are using your mobile phone works a lot better than having to sign in to Paypal from where we stand. If you sign up soon, you can qualify to be in the running to win a free Xbox 360. An Xbox 360, plus an additional five bucks for free? What’s not to like?

Woot Hard Drive

Just a quick heads up for those of you who appreciate a good deal. Today’s Woot! is a 250 GB Western Digital Caviar drive, selling for just $50 USD. Not too shabby, if we may say so ourselves. I almost bought one, when I realized that it wasn’t a SATA drive, and that it only has a 2 MB cache. Oh, and it’s refurbished. Still, $50 for 250 GB of storage is a rarity.

Plantronics DSP400Holy smokes, Amazon has lost their minds.  Amazon is currently selling the Plantronics DSP-400 headset for $40.94 with free shipping!  I personally own this headset and I can vouch for the fact that it is absolutely kick-ass.  If you use Skype or any VoIP service, or maybe do a little podcasting, this headset is definitely a must-have, and at these prices, it’s insane not to go grab one.  I remember this headset costing upwards $120+ not even a year ago.  Grab ‘em while they’re hot!

If you have worked in an enterprise environment, have probably heard about this company called VMware.  For those of you new to VMware, these guys make a product that allows you to run multiple servers from ONE box, all done virtually.  It’s what’s referred to as “virtualization” and is the ultimate in geekdom for an enterprise.  More importantly, it can really make an administrators life a lot easier if implemented correctly, and save the company a boat load.

Cnet has published an article referencing a rumor that VMware will be releasing one of their core products into the wild for FREE next week.  This is HUGE news.  The idea behind this is that since VMware is now seeing some stiff competition heading their way, they are going to cut it off at the pass by using the “crack head” effect.  In short, hook on a free sample, and sell them on the big products.  Sounds like a logical enough plan.  If this pans out to be true, we could be in for some interesting times in the IT world.  The only missing link in VMware’s product line is being able to run OS X, if they can accomplish that, their stock is going to skyrocket.
